Think about the websites you visit most often. Why do you return to them? Most likely it’s because they offer content that is of interest to you, whether it’s informative or entertaining. While it’s important that your site is pleasing to the eye, it’s far more important that you have quality content. Many website owners focus a great deal of time, money, and energy on the design of their website, while neglecting the content.
I visit the Drudge Report nearly every day. That site is about as visually bland as it gets. The average teenager could create the layout in a few hours. The appeal of the site is that they always seem to have the jump on breaking news stories. What about Facebook? Do you go there to admire the elaborate site design? No, you go because you want to catch up on the latest from family and friends. What if you want to buy a digital camera? You enter some search phrases and pull up a few websites. Are you more likely to buy from the site that looks beautiful or from the site that provides you with detailed reviews and recommendations?
Design is important. As a web designer, when I see a business website that looks like an amateur created it in Frontpage ten years ago, I come away with a bad impression of that company. However, I also see many small business websites that have an adequate design, but boring content; nothing to attract visitors or encourage them to return.
I suggest that you take a fresh look at your own website with these thoughts in mind. What can you offer that will be interesting and useful to visitors, so they will choose to visit your site over the millions of others on the internet? Photos and images can make a page more appealing and I recommend their use, but keyword-rich text is essential.
Your content should use your target keywords in a natural way. That will improve your search engine rankings; as will continually adding content to your site. In general the search engines view larger sites as more authoritative and worthy of higher rankings. With high quality content on your site, you are far more likely to get links from other websites. This is a huge factor in search engine rankings.
No gimmicks. This is an honest and effective strategy for increasing traffic to your site. It will take time to build the content and your audience, so you’ll need to be patient and persistent. There are other techniques you’ll need to utilize also, but quality content is your foundation to success!
