How Much Does a Website Cost?

As a web designer, I am frequently asked how much it would cost to design a website. Unless I have a lot more details, the question is impossible to answer. I like to compare it to asking how much a house costs. As you can see from the photos on the left, houses have many different purposes, sizes, and features, all of which have a great deal to do with how much they cost.

Just as it costs more in both time and materials to build the mansion than the tiny house on wheels, it takes a lot more time to build a website with hundreds of pages, blogging, social networking, and ecommerce features than it does to build a simple ten-page informational website.

One is not necessarily better than the other. It depends on your purpose and goals for your website. Those are the things I try to determine in the initial website consultation.

So, how much does a website cost? Once I determine how many pages you need, general design idea, number of forms, photo galleries, forums, blogs, ecommerce, database functionality, and any other special features, I can give you an accurate price. I have created websites with prices ranging from $500 to $6,000.

As I state on the home page, There's more to it than just putting up a website. If all I do is sell you a website, you may be disappointed with the results. A website can be a very effective tool for your business or organization, but getting the website online is only part of the process. Search engine optimization, ongoing content updates, social media, analysis of website statistics, link building, and more are generally required to ensure your website's success.
