I design websites. I would love it if, every time someone entered the words “web design” in a search engine, the VWeb Web Design site would pop up. Guess what, when I enter those words into Google, 563,000,000 results are found. I consider myself an optimist, but you’re talking a lot of money, work, and maybe a little luck, to get to the top of that list.
A more realistic goal would be to target a specific geographic area. I’m located in Marysville, Ohio, a small town, but it would be nice if anyone happened to search for a web designer in Marysville, that my site would appear first in the search results.
Where “web design” is a very broad term, with a huge amount of competition, I’ll choose to target the keyword phrase “web design Marysville Ohio.” Each page in your website can be optimized for a different keyword phrase, so since I’m close to Columbus, Ohio, a much larger market, I would create a separate page to target a keyword phrase using that location.
An additional thing to consider, as my headline for this article asks, is the order of the words in the phrase. Turns out that the order does make a difference. If you can match exactly the phrase a searcher enters, you’ll have a better chance at a higher ranking in the search results. Also people may use variations of the words “web” and “design.”
Here are some possible combinations:
What started off as something pretty simple is now becoming more complicated. People might use any of those variations. You can use keyword research tools to see which of the main words are searched for more frequently and make those your primary keyword phrases, then sprinkle the variations throughout the web page also.
A little keyword research reveals the number of daily searches (in order from highest to lowest):
Obviously the “design” variations result in more searches than the “designer” ones, so those will be my top phrases. Now all that’s required is adding the keywords and variations in the following areas:
If you’ve done all those things, your on-page optimization should be complete. Keep in mind that most experts estimate that on-page search engine optimization accounts for about 15% of the factors that search engines analyze in determining search engine results. This will give you a good foundation to begin working on the off-page factors, which have the largest impact on search engine rankings. See the article "Incoming Links Crucial to Search Engine Ranking" for more information about off-page search engine factors.
Since I was born in Marysville, Ohio and currently live there, maybe that will give me an edge on web design projects in the area also!
